From Syrupy to Creamy: Mediterranean Desserts I Keep Making

Published: Mar 4, 2026 by Ayla Clulee

From syrupy pastries to creamy milk-based puddings, these are the Mediterranean desserts I find myself making again and again. These sweet treats offer something for every kind of sweet tooth; they’re easy to make, and they always turn out great. Some are rich and soaked in syrup, others are light and easy to serve by the spoon, but all of them are made with simple ingredients and easy methods.

Soğuk Baklava, or “Cold Baklava with Milk,” is a lighter, milk-based take on the traditional Turkish dessert Pistachio Baklava. Instead of the usual sugar syrup, it’s soaked in a cool, sweetened milk mixture and served chilled.

Easy Turkish Kabak Tatlısı, known as the candied pumpkin dessert, is a traditional sweet that has been made for generations. It is prepared with just two main ingredients, pumpkin and sugar, and usually topped with crushed walnuts and a drizzle of tahini before serving.

    Lokma - Fried Dough Balls

    Ayla Clulee

Lokma Dessert, or Fried Sweet Dough Balls, is made with a simple yeast dough that’s deep-fried until golden and crisp, then coated in syrup or honey. These little bites are light, airy, and just a little sticky-sweet in the best way. With only a handful of pantry ingredients and some resting time for the dough, you can make this classic treat at home and enjoy it warm and fresh.

    Galaktoboureko

Galaktoboureko is a simple and delicious Greek dessert made from layers of phyllo filled with semolina custard. The cooled syrup is added at the end while the pastry is still warm out of the oven. Think of it as baklava with pudding in the middle with less syrup.

Turkish Ice Cream, also known as Maras Dondurma, is a traditional sweet known for its thick, stretchy, and chewy texture, unlike regular gelato or ice cream. You can even eat it with a fork and knife instead of licking it from a cone.
